Joshua Tree Residence 02 Joshua Tree, CA2018
CONCEPT

This was an initial concept to create a landscaping design strategy for a residence in Joshua Tree, CA. The client's house was "new construction" and they were looking for ways to create a narrative from the street into the back of the property.

The front-facing side had mechanical equipment that was visually exposed, so the first task was to mask it with a fence/screen wall that created a false façade. Hardscape was added at an ADA approved gentle slope to accommodate their parents and to visually establish way-finding and a delineation from "front" to "back" as the main house entrance was located in the middle of the building.

The topography of the site is very steep and so vignettes were added to take advantage of the views and existing conditions. In a guest bedroom/office area, a cantilevered balcony doesn't have easy access to the ground plane, so floating steps were added. In the back area, a patio zone was created with hardscape for both outdoor dining and lounging. Nearby, a small water feature was integrated into the corten path edging to provide wildlife with drinkable water with a circulating fountain and a low profile. The path edging bleeds into the landscape at moments to suggest "path" versus "nature" as an alternative to minimize hardscaping. Planter zones are created to provide future native plants and to capture water runoff from rain events.
